The Starbucks However-You-Want-It Frappuccino, a Microcosm of Life???

The purpose of today’s essay is to discuss how the introduction of Starbucks However-You-Want-It Frappuccino is a microcosm of life.

First a little background for the uninitiated.  The Frappuccino is the iconic Starbucks frozen beverage and is prepared by barista’s, like myself.  It comes in both coffee and cream versions, is immensely popular and has been available since the mid-1990’s.  Recently, the powers that be, in their infinite wisdom, decided to reinvent the wheel and introduce the However-You-Want-It Frappuccino.  They essentially deconstructed the beverage into it’s component parts thereby greatly increasing the degree to which costumers can customize their beverage (as if there were not enough options already! OY!).

There are three ways I feel that the new beverage is a microcosm of life.  The first, is that change, like death and taxes, is the only sure thing in life.  Change can be either positive or negative.  In either case it tends to force us put out of our comfort zones, to learn and hopefully grow.  None of this comes without a certain amount of stress but that is often what growth demands.  I myself am not a fan of change especially for its own sake (more on that in a minute).  Secondly, like the new Frappuccino life tends to be more fun and interesting when you have more options rather than fewer ones.  Choices are what make life worth living.  However,  sometimes it is best to leave well enough alone.  Some people are change junkies.  Perhaps easily bored they change some aspect of their loves merely for its own sake.  This can often have dire consequences.   In business I have seen this happen on too many occasions.  I believe this stems, in large part, from these large networks of highly compensated executives who are desperate to justify their existences.

For Starbucks it remains to be seen whether or not the However-You-Want-It Frappuccino is the kind of change that make things better or if it is Starbucks version of New Coke (  Like many things, stay tuned!
